Principal’s Notes

From all of us to all of you, have a great summer and we look forward to seeing you again in August.

A very Happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers and grandfathers from all of us at St. Pius X High School. We hope you have a great day and you are all in our prayers.

To The Class Of 2006

Congratulations and thank you for all you have done these past four years while you were a student at St. Pius X. Your hard work has paid off and now it is time for you to go forward and put to use the knowledge and the values that your parents and teachers have been instilling in you these past seventeen or eighteen years. For your efforts in the classroom, in competition, in activities, and in the spiritual life of this school, we all say, “thank you.”

To the parents, thank you for all of your support during those years as well. The sacrifices you have made to give your children the best faith-based educational foundation possible must be recognized. Thank you for the many hours of volunteering to

drive, serve lunch, clean the school building and its grounds, and the many other tasks that come up throughout the year.

To the pastors, principals, and staff of our elementary school in which these students attended before coming to St. Pius X High School, thank you as well. You have played a major role in the development of these young men and women and you should feel proud of the Class of 2006.

Host Families Needed

Open your heart and your home, host a foreign exchange student! Students arrive mid-August 2006 and are here either the 1st semester or the whole year, leaving 1 week after school is over. Students are from various countries and backgrounds. They speak English, have their own medical insurance and spending money. Their ages are 15-18 years old. For more information please contact Missy Petit at 816-453-3450, ext. 117.

New Parent Orientation

On Sunday, August 13th, from 1-4 pm, we will be having a required orientation session for all new parents to St. Pius X. This day has proved very helpful and is packed with a lot of important information. Mark this day on your calendars.

Summer Office Hours

On June 6th, we will operate during our summer hours, which are from 8am-1pm Monday Through Friday. We will be closed the entire day on June 5th for our annual Golf Benefit. These hours will be in effect from now until August 4th.

Required Registration Forms

for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students

The 2006/2007 St. Pius X High School Registration form and Be a S.A.F.E. Parent form are available on the school’s website, www.stpiusxhs-kc.com, and were due back by April 1st. We have not received forms for all of our students. These forms must be completed each year for each student. Please return these forms to the office as soon as possible. If you need to verify that these forms have been received, please call Mrs. O’Malley. An email will be sent out mid-June with missing student’s names as a reminder. Student schedules will be held on July 17th if we do not have the required forms.

New at St. Pius X High School

Online Bookstore

We are very excited to announce the new way to purchase required consumable books for next year. Please do not confuse this with our rental textbooks. The consumable books are required novels, workbooks, etc. The consumable books will no longer be sold at school. Please look for upcoming information in a letter that will be sent to each school family’s home. Student schedules will be available in the front office on Monday, July 17th. Once you receive the class schedule you can then go to our website and see the list of consumable books that is required for each class. The online bookstore may be accessed directly at www.backtobooks.com/stpiusx.htm . (The online bookstore website is also linked from the SPX website.) We are hoping to make the purchase of these items more convenient and flexible for our families. The St. Pius X Book Store will continue to have student planners, dress code shorts, polo shirt, and sweatshirts.

Giuseppe Sarto Award

Thank you to all who sent in nominations for the Giuseppe Sarto award. We are blessed with the many families who help us throughout the school year. This award was established to recognize those who go above and beyond the call for the students of the school.

Student Reading Skills

The English department is working to encourage independent reading by our students. Each grade level is expected to participate and will be assessed at the beginning of the school year. Visit teacher websites for reading lists or specific assignments. Ms. Plumb teaches incoming freshman. Mr. Hopper teaches sophomores. Mr. Murphy has his expectations for AP Language and Composition. Mrs. Carlson teaches juniors and AP Literature and Composition, and Mr. Smithmier, seniors and ACCP English; both have expectations detailed on their sites.

Some experts recommend that students read two million words a year on their own. Others suggest reading at least thirty minutes a day. We want all students to read at least thirty minutes a day and keep track of what they read.

Share reading as a family: Choose books to read together based on your family’s interest and background. Take time during or after meals to talk

about current reading.

Cafeteria News

We would like to thank all parents and students for being very accommodating during the first year of the new cafeteria system. We have had very few concerns reported from parents. We will use what we have learned from this year to make next year's lunch line work even better. Have a great summer!! NOTE: Any balance left in your student's account will carry over to next year.

Please read the following note from Sister Andrea in response to the money donated from the St. Pius X High School’s St. Joseph Table. Thank you to everyone for making this a success!
