APPROVED INSTITUTIONS FOR SERVICE HOUR REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION
UPDATED 6/09

General Information: The purposes of the service requirements are to heighten an awareness of the plight of the less fortunate, to develop in our students a sense of civic responsibility and a sense of Christian stewardship. St. Pius X students are required to perform 60 hours of service for graduation. Students are encouraged to achieve a balance between their community, Parish, and school; however, they are NOT required to divide their time equally among these three. It is recommended that a student complete 15 hours a year to stay on track. The three categories for graduation are: St. Pius X High School, Parish/Church, and Community. No payment may be rendered or accepted by students for the service.

Because we want our students to develop a sense of civic responsibility, the majority of service should be done in the community, from approved agencies. (A list of approved agencies is available below.) No more than 20 hours at any one organization will count toward fulfilling graduation requirements. Any amount over 20 hours will be recorded in an “other” category to go towards scholarship opportunities and resumes. All service hours need to be properly documented for credit towards graduation. A supervisor—not the student—from where he/she is volunteering must complete a service hour form. These forms are available on our website homepage on the right hand side: www.stpiusxhs-kc.com. Students are responsible for printing a copy and getting them to the agency. If a student is performing multiple hours over several days at the same agency, only one service hour form should be completed. This will make record keeping easier for everyone and assure that service is appropriately documented. Once the form is completed, turn it in to Mrs. Hamerle or the front office within two weeks of performing the service. Summer hours may be mailed or taken to the front office prior to the new school year beginning. Students are required to stay current on hours (7.5/semester) for transcripts to be sent.

St. Pius X High School - Students are encouraged and asked from time to time to do service for the school. No more than 20 hours of service to the school can be used toward the graduation requirement.

Student’s Parish/Church - Students are encouraged to do service in their parish/church however, only 20 hours of work done in the student’s home parish/church will count toward the graduation requirement. Service completed with another parish/church will go in the ‘other’ category. The purpose of this limitation is to have the students expand beyond very local needs to the larger community.

Community-The following are places that have been approved for service. No more than 20 hours from any one place will go towards graduation. Service to other places that are not on this list must be pre-approved by Mrs. Hamerle or Mr. Monachino in order to go towards graduation. Before going to one of these places, please call to be sure the business is still in need of volunteers and what needs to be completed before volunteering. Some places need to run background checks before accepting volunteers. Web sites and phone numbers are provided.
