SPANISH I:

Prerequisite: None

The course introduces the basic patterns and grammatical elements of the language. It aims to enable the student to acquire an increasing control of the four language skills: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. Exposure to Spanish-speaking cultures is interwoven with class work.

Grade 09~12
 

SPANISH II:
Credit 1
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Spanish I or passing score on Spanish placement exam.

In this course, students will express themselves in writing, producing presentational and interpersonal compositions in various contexts. They will communicate orally in presentational and interpersonal modes, demonstrating level-appropriate structure, syntax, pronunciation, and cultural sensitivity. In addition, they will comprehend written and verbal target language input from authentic materials as well as peer-written texts, in-class discussion, lectures, and presentations.

 

Grade 9~12
 

SPANISH III:
Credit 1
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of Spanish II with a Grade of B or Higher, and Teacher Recommendation
Course Fee: $15 for literature

In Spanish III, students will improve communication in all four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. A grammar review covering previously learned grammatical structures and vocabulary will enhance the speaking in the target language. Some concentration will be placed on history and culture, primarily in the Spanish language. Literary works and other target language texts will be introduced.

SPANISH IV
Credit 1
Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish III with a Grade of B or Higher, and Teacher Recommendation
Course Fee: $15 for literature

Spanish IV aims at refining all four skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. There will be a continued emphasis placed on oral and written communication. Students will enhance these skills through the study of advanced grammar, literary and other texts, and Spanish-speaking cultures.

AP SPANISH
Credit 1
Prerequisite: Completion of Spanish III with a Grade of B or Higher, and Teacher Recommendation
Course Fee: $25 for AP Spanish Language Workbook

In this rigorous course, students will expand their command of Spanish, integrating the four language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) through exploration and synthesis of authentic resources. According to the College Board’s Spanish Language Course Description, 2009-2011, assignments and activities will equip students:

to demonstrate their level of Spanish proficiency across three communicative modes [Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational] and the five goal areas outlined in the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities). The course is meant to be comparable to third year (fifth or sixth semester) college and university courses that focus on speaking and writing in the target language at an advanced level. (5)

Students are expected to take the AP Spanish Language Exam in May. Most colleges and universities award college credit for scores of 3, 4, or 5.

FRENCH I:

Aims to enable students to acquire a basic understanding of the French language. Basic skills in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing are ultimate goals. The first year emphasis is on acquiring a basic vocabulary and understanding basic grammatical structures.

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of French I with a Grade of B or Higher.

Basic skills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing are ultimate goals. Emphasis is on written and oral expression. Goals are achieved through reports, increased oral communication, readings and cultural elements.

FRENCH III:
Credit 1
Prerequisite: Successful Completion of French II with a Grade of B or Higher.

French III emphasizes oral and written communication skills through continued study of conversations, writing, reading, grammar, and vocabulary.

 


Grade 11~12
 


FRENCH IV:
Credit 1

Prerequisite: Successful Completion of French III

French IV builds upon knowledge gained in previous courses, strengthening a student’s oral and written communication skills, and basic understanding of the French language.
